The Noi - This is still a work in progress, but these are the basics and how it has started. Once I have it completely done correctly and set up to read a little better I will fix it. Thank you.
Characteristics -
The Noi have a general disdain for stupidity, they are often looked upon, if you can ever find one that is, with a sense of arrogance in their thinking. They tend to be reclusive, deeming that the rest of society is in fact beneath them and therefor not worthy of their time though on occasion they have been known to become lonely and leave the safety of whatever hidey-hole they have planted themselves in and go looking for others. While they do not generally have alliances with any certain type of personage or race the leaders of the Noi prefer they avoid most things that are uncivilized.
The Noi have an interesting bond with that which is below their feet, they are wildly protective of it and yet if you go into one of their cities you will find it looks like a modern day mess! They have perfected the art of blending magic and mechanics often times spending years tinkering with this or that, never realizing that the world has passed them by. They are fast to learn and slow to forget thus feeding that arrogant belief that they are in fact the smartest race ever.
Pros: Intelligence is boosted as well as “Earth” Magics. Working with metal to form very simple machines is normal for these strange creatures.
Cons: They abhor death and avoid any who have dealings with it. It makes them physically sick to see destruction even if it is committed by their own hand. They are not very strong and easily subdued. ( Think Ooooh shiny!)
Physical appearance:
Both men and women are fairly lithe in form, they are often mistake as human or elven though it is in looks only. Noi have safe guards built into their bodies to keep them from death. They have one heart as well as one large multi-chambered lung which will seal off a chamber in the event of damage. Should a fatality be in the works for a Noi, by old age or damage a special gland will release a chemical within their bodies that will essentially freeze them at that very moment. This is a safeguard which is usually exploited by those who would trap a Noi for one reason or another. All Noi will eventually develop a deep insanity that will end in “the changing slumber.”
Society:
Religion - They practice the religion of self preservation and worship of what they experience. Their senses lead them more often than not and they will usually go with logic over faith any day.
Politics:
The Noi are unofficially influenced by a more Oligarcian society, ran by those who live within the shadows. Some say the oldest families control the society through intrigue and wealth while others believe that there is a more sinister puppet master lurking in the background. The “Society of Air” as it is call has run the Noi governing area for as long as anyone could possibly know. Some speculate that the real leaders of the Noi are not in fact Noi at all but Vampires or Elves who take a keen interest into keeping these creatures alive and unspoiled.
The “official” governing body of the Noi is far more open and transparent then a normal government. This group is call the Assembly of Elements and is often times accused of being too cautious. It is made of one member from each family as a representation of their beliefs, all families have their own internal structures but this they conform to, usually it is a trusted elder that will sit in the Assembly but every so often an ‘upstart’ will rise to that rank.
They have a stance of Isolationism, preferring to stay out of the affairs of any and all around them and wishing for the same but will often have dignitaries join with the rest of the world in order to maintain a relationship of peaceful co-existence.
